Can Tom Really Win ‘Succession’? Weighing the Odds for an Audience Favorite

Throughout the final season of “Succession,” IndieWire will take an extended look at the various power players in HBO’s drama to determine not only if they can win control of the Roy family business, but what they would actually gain in doing so — and what they may lose, simply by playing. After Episode 1, “The Munsters,” it’s time to vet: Tom Wambsgans.

At the end of “Succession’s” Season 4 premiere, it’s only fitting that Tom is the man in the middle. On one side, perched behind him like a certain smirking lion, is Logan (Brian Cox), eagerly awaiting word from the escalating negotiations over Pierce Global Media. On the other side — of the phone, of the country, of the negotiations, take your pick — is Shiv (Sarah Snook), his wife and current opposition...

The 15 Best ‘South Park’ Episodes, from ‘Imaginationland’ to ‘Casa Bonita’

Plenty of adult animated shows seem to last forever, but the most impressive thing about the decades-long run of “South Park” is the series’ willingness to evolve and change. Sure, the bones of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Comedy Central series have remained consistent: its foul-mouthed dialogue, offensive humor, surrealist tendencies, and central group of four elementary school boys have carried from the first episode through and beyond the show’s 300th.

But the exploits that Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny get into around their Colorado mountain town these days look a lot different than they did back in 1997, when the show first premiered...

Jesse Armstrong Hoped He’d ‘Get Argued Out’ of Ending ‘Succession’ by His Writing Staff

When Jesse Armstrong announced that “Succession” would be ending with Season 4, it was a shock to TV fans around the world — and his own cast and crew. While Armstrong and his creative team had been deliberately ambiguous about plans for the show’s conclusion, it’s always hard to believe anyone would willingly give up making the biggest show on television until it actually happens.

But that’s exactly what Armstrong did, and the final season of his blockbuster corporate satire premieres on HBO tonight. It appears that the show is ending on a high note, as reviews for the final season have been overwhelmingly positive. But ending the series after four carefully crafted seasons was not always the plan.

In a recent interview with Variety, Armstrong revealed that he considered chan...

Bill Lawrence Promises a ‘Scrubs’ Movie Is Coming: ‘It’s Inevitable”

With seemingly every beloved sitcom under the sun getting the reboot treatment in recent years, it’s only a matter of time before “Scrubs” returns to the proverbial airwaves in some capacity. Bill Lawrence has never been shy about wanting to make a movie out of his iconic hospital comedy — and if social media posts and Super Bowl commercials are any indicator, his cast seems to be taking every opportunity to spend time together.

So it’s inevitable that members the show’s creative team are frequently asked about a potential movie while promoting other projects. Speaking to Variety about his Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” Lawrence gave an update on a potential “Scrubs” revival — and offered fans some good news.

Ben Affleck Is ‘Kind of Disturbed’ by How Much Jennifer Lopez Loves ‘Yellowstone’

Ben Affleck’s marriage to Jennifer Lopez appears to be going strong — both onscreen and off. Less than a year after the reunited couple got married, Affleck signed on to produce “Unstoppable,” a new sports drama that’s set to star Lopez, through his Artists Equity production company. But while they might be in lockstep about their upcoming film project, that doesn’t mean they always agree on what to watch.

Appearing on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” to promote his upcoming film “Air,” Affleck joked that his wife’s TV preferences occasionally puzzle him. He explained that Lopez enjoys Taylor Sheridan’s Western soap opera “Yellowstone” — apparently much more than he does.

“I’m kind of disturbed that my wife really likes ‘Yellowstone,’” Affleck said, before adding t...

How New York Might Prevent a Subway Fare Increase: They’ll Tax Streamers

Quick, what’s the connection between Netflix and the New York City Subway? Aside from “you watch Netflix on your phone while on the way to work,” the right answer is “one might soon be paying for the other.”

Per The Wall Street Journal, New York State lawmakers are considering putting the state sales tax on streaming services — such as Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and others — in the state’s new budget. Under a proposed version of the budget submitted by the New York State Assembly, a 4 percent state sales tax would be applied to digital streaming products, which would result in, for example, $.80 charges on Netflix’s $19.99 per month premium subscription.

A Netflix rep told IndieWire that a 4 percent local sales tax already applies to Netflix subscribers in New York...
